About
Southern Structures, Inc. was started by Hugh A. Stump Jr. as a contracting company building room additions and small projects one at a time. Mr. Stump realized in the early 60’s that modular construction could be accomplished faster, with consistent quality, and with less complications than site built construction. This idea is what began SSI history in modular buildings.
After purchasing buildings from other manufacturers for about a decade, Mr. Stump made the decision to open a company owned manufacturing facility as he could not get the quality and custom type structures he felt was desired by the marketplace. In 1978 SSI opened its own manufacturing plant in Ocala, Florida. Over the next 25 years the company produced several hundred residential and multi-family complexes as well as over a thousand commercial modulars for use as classrooms, daycares, medical offices, stores and many others.
In 1995, under 2nd generation management SSI moved from its original 20,000 sq. ft. plant ( which had been expanded over the years to 32,000 sq. ft. ) to a much larger 10 acre facility with over 62,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and storage space. Production capabilities for large projects is about 3,000 sq. ft. ( 1800 normally ) of finished building modules per day. SSI maintains a skilled design, estimating, and production staff, and also does most installation and erection work with in house personnel. SSI operates separate and fully equipped erection crews as necessary, but subcontracts locally for certain special trade specialties as/if needed.
Independent professional consultants in the architectural and engineering disciplines are employed as needed, along with third-party professional review and inspection firms for compliance with various state industrialized building system regulations to insure your building is fully state approved.
SSI has provided structures for all branches of the Military and NASA, hundreds of state and local government agencies, school boards, and thousands of private individuals, corporations, dealers, and developers. Other projects have included housing in two foreign countries, vacation and resort living units, 55,000 sq. ft. of specialized offices for Lockheed-Martin ( Eastern Space and Missile Command ), and two entire “relocatable” schools for Dade County School Board. SSI can provide a wide range of structures to fit almost any need. Designs range from single modules, to dozens of modules under one roof, including multi-story. Specifications range from the minimum code-approved construction, to non combustible, permanent steel-framed and concrete modules for schools and other medical applications, prisons, and many other uses.
